When I’m getting ready, one thing I hate is being rushed when I don’t really know what I want to wear. And my husband probably hates me not knowing what I want to wear even more than I do…That’s why, as I’ve told you before on the blog, I like to have “uniforms” in place, or go-to outfits I can have in my head to get dressed fairly quickly. My most popular post thus far on the blog was my casual mom uniform
featuring the jogger pant (click on link to read it), so I’m thinking a lot of my readers are like me in that they want quick and easy outfits that don’t compromise style.
DISCLAIMER: I am a quilted/puffer vest newbie. I have avoided them for years. I thought they’d make me look like a marshmallow or too “mom-ish.” I was wrong and just needed to find the right one for me! Don’t get me wrong – I am so proud to be a mom, but I like to try to remain current and trendy in my wardrobe. Unfortunately, sometimes moms get a reputation of dressing a little behind the times, let’s say…. So I caved and bought the black vest featured above because I’ve seen them on blogs, on Pinterest, a million different places, basically, worn a million different ways. And when I tried it on, I was pleasantly surprised in how flattering it was.
So here’s casual mom uniform 2. And this outfit is not just for moms…The beauty of this uniform/formula is that you make it your own based on your personal style. I just especially like this uniform for a mom who needs to get out the door in a hurry (or gives up on making herself look presentable because she already made multiple kids look presentable…been there!!).
Cable knit sweater + skinny quilted vest (left open) + skinny jean + boot of your choice
Why cable knit?
I love a classic cable knit. But it can be really bulky and often creates broad shoulders on me. The uniform/formula above was born in the Old Navy dressing room: While there, I tried the skinny quilted vest over the cable knit sweater I liked. It worked! I loved how the vest actually worked to slim my figure by adding structure to the outfit. Since I am not petite by any means, I like the skinny quilted vest (vs. the heavier, bulkier version) to help streamline my silhouette. My sweater is from Forever 21
, and the vest is from Old Navy. The black is currently unavailable online (only available in red), but try to find it in-store! Stud earrings are from Stella and Dot
Why skinny jeans?
The skinny jeans also streamline the outfit. They create structure, just like the vest. And the ones I’m wearing above (American Eagle jeggings) are my soul skinny jeans. Vintage black, slashed, and comfy. Yay. By using an email coupon and AE’s buy one/get one for half off sale during Columbus Day weekend, I was able to get two pairs for $50. The other pair I got can be seen below. (Black jeggings
: American Eagle)
Does the type of boots matter? In short, no. I wanted to add a little bit of a pattern to my look, and my favorite is leopard print! (Boots are from Target, two years old)
Here’s another variation of the outfit:
I tried to think about basic pieces you all might have in your closet so you could see how this uniform/formula may work for you, and I know in my friends/family circle especially, cognac/tan tall boots are really popular. And as I mentioned in Friday’s post, I love black and tan together! And to dress up the look just a bit, I added some jewelry.
