As many of you know from reading this blog, I am an Urban Decay eye make-up junkie. I have been for many years. (See THIS POST if you don’t believe me.) If you look at the “about me” section of my blog, you’ll notice that I said I’d NEVER buy another brand of eyeliner. Ahem.
Well, I did…
At my oldest younger sister’s suggestion, I bought Benefit’s They’re Real! Push-Up Liner.
So why did I cheat on Urban Decay? Sometimes I don’t want to do the whole eyeshadow primer, three eyeshadows, eyeliner, mascara song and dance, but I want my eyes to stand out. My two oldest younger sisters (if that makes ANY sense) are awesome at using black liquid liner on their top lids, and their eyes really pop with a minimal amount of liquid liner and mascara. I want to have that look in my go-to eye make-up arsenal, but I am terrible at drawing a thick line with the Urban Decay pencil and with liquid liner. I’m just not an artist that way. Urban Decay does sell other eyeliners, but I have always heard good things about the Benefit brand. So I went with it. I felt this type of liner was the best happy medium between what I currently use and liquid liner I could find.
First of all, I will say it was difficult to get the liner started. I kept turning and turning, with nothing coming out. But then all of the sudden, a ton popped out of the top. That’s probably on me, yes, but I was sad I wasted so much liner.
Since the tip is so much thicker than a pencil, there is a learning curve if you always use a pencil (at least there was for me). In the first two days I used it, I did have to clean up my eye area with eye make-up remover on a cotton pad, but that’s not too terribly uncommon for me.
The most important question I like to have answered when I buy an eyeliner is this one: will it last all day? Essentially, I look for an eyeliner that will stay put, with minimal bleeding above or below where I have used it. So in the pictures below, I’m showing you how my eyeliner lasted throughout the day. I’m going to take you from 9-5 and show you what it looked like after a tough workout. And sorry for the inconsistent lighting…obviously, I moved from room to room throughout the day. (No, stay-at-home moms don’t sit on the couch all day eating snacks…)
As you can see, the eyeliner did a great job holding up all day. I’m pretty sure in the 5:30 picture that my mascara is what you see under my eye since I did wear mascara on my bottom lashes that day, something I don’t normally do.
And below you will find see how the eyeliner held up during a mid-day (super sweaty) workout (on a different day)…
Again, I think we are seeing smudged mascara here. The eyeliner is holding up really well!
So, to break it down for you…
PROS: Holds to eyelid well, easier to create a thick line on the top lid (versus using an eye pencil), not nearly as tricky to use as liquid liner
CONS: Not a super easy conversion for eye pencil wearers (a little difficult to use initially)
I do not regret buying this eyeliner, and I’m challenging myself to use it more frequently so I will get better at my technique. I bought it to achieve a “thick eyeliner on top” look, and that’s exactly what I’m getting. And though I love eye make-up, my techniques are not always the best, so you may find it’s easier for you to use once you buy it. I would definitely recommend it to anyone with the understanding that it may take some practice when you begin to use it.
P.S. I’m still an Urban Decay fan. Each eyeliner in my make-up collection is special in its own way… 🙂
