Navy and Black Together. Yes, I Said Together.

Some rules are just meant to be broken, especially on your quest to find your personal style. If you’re not experimenting with the rules, you may get stuck in a rut for months or years and then realize, Oh no. Do I even have a personal style??

And we all know the typical fashion rules, like don’t mix brown and black or don’t wear white after Labor Day or NEVER mix navy and black. Oops, I did. I broke that last one last week. There really was no rhyme or reason to my decision to break such a steadfast rule…I just wanted to try it out. And actually, wearing neutrals that don’t really “belong” together seems to be on trend right now. Navy and black fall into that category.

If you’re game for some neutral fashion rule breaking this week, here are some tips that I think may help. I had these thoughts in my mind as I put this look together last week (again, rushed for time, so light on the accessories…).
1. One neutral should fade a bit into the background. You may not be able to tell in all of the pictures, but my jeggings are a soft black instead of an intense black. The softness in the black hue works well with the intensity of the navy.
2. Play with textures. The chunkiness of the cardigan, the holes in the jeans, and the leather tips on my espadrilles all work to make the outfit more interesting. I would not wear the same fabric or “weight” of material on the top and the bottom of the outfit. In other words, in my outfit, I like the disparity in the thickness of the cardigan and the thinner quality of the jegging.
3. Add in another neutral (or two) if you’re a bit timid. Neutrals get a bad rap for being boring, but when you pair unexpected hues and textures together, it can be kind of fun to create something all your own! I personally do not like to be super matchy-matchy. I went with a soft gray in my tee (I thought white would be too stark in the outfit.) and added my cognac/camel tote.
So, as I said, I broke the navy/black rule last week when I met with my MOPS group. We actually talked about this rule during our time together, and I just HAD to share this last picture.
One of my sweet mentor moms, Clara, showed me at Bible study this morning that she was trying out her navy and black! LOVE IT! If you can tell, her jeggings are actually a darker hue on the back than they are on the front, and she wore her cute black flats to complement her outfit.  (P.S. How about her denim-on-denim look???) Clara, you are amazing for so many reasons, including your fashion!
My outfit details (I can ask Clara for hers if you want me to! I forgot to ask her today. I know she said her jeggings were from Von Maur…)
