Strained. That’s the word one might use to describe my relationship with Stitch Fix right at the moment. As you faithful readers know, I was not really pleased with my last Fix (as I wrote about in my blog). But. . . I can’t deny that I love the idea of someone else helping me build my wardrobe, and (oh, by the way) also sending the pieces directly to my home with minimal effort on my part.
Right now, I am adjusting to my transition from stay-at-home mom to working mom, and my time (just like anyone else’s) is valuable. Though I do love shopping, I often don’t have the time for lengthy, wardrobe-building shopping trips. And even as a stay-at-home mom, taking both of my kids shopping was not a treat for any parties involved.
So what is a girl to do? My plan was to stay the course with Stitch Fix for a few more months, hoping I land a good stylist a time or two.
But now I have a different plan…I’m going to put Stitch Fix on hold for a bit and try a different option: the Twirl Trunk. Let me tell you a little bit about this personal shopping service.
Beginning next week (September 8 is the launch!), Twirl Boutique, located in downtown Cedar Falls, will offer a new personal shopping service (the Twirl Trunk), which is very similar to Stitch Fix in that you pay a $20 styling fee, fill out a profile, and receive five pieces in the mail, all which cater to your wardrobe wants and needs, your personal style, your body type, and your preferences in general.
When Jenna, owner of Twirl Boutique, asked me to review the Twirl Trunk service, I was super excited for this opportunity since I shop at Twirl anyway, and it allowed me to see some of their fall pieces. Also, I knew my blog readers would love to have a service like the Twirl Trunk available to them.
So let me tell you a little bit about how it works (and why I’m personally sold on the idea). . .
Five pieces arrive at your door for a small styling fee of $20. Once the fee is paid, you will receive your trunk. Clothes arrive and are returned at no shipping cost to the buyer (shipping labels provided). If you do decide to return any pieces, all you have to do is note which items you’re returning and return them within five business days, again, with a provided shipping label.
Let’s again mention the sheer convenience of wanting to stay on trend and having someone else help you do it when you may not have a whole lot of time (or patience) for shopping.
Once you express your interest in a trunk, Jenna (Twirl) will email you an invoice for the styling fee, along with a style profile. When I filled it out for my first trunk, I found it to be very thorough (it included pictures to rank based on your style preferences, too) and comparable to the profile from Stitch Fix. After I finished it and emailed it back to Jenna, I was pretty confident she would be able to provide me with a good trunk.
2. Discount for keeping more pieces
If you decide to keep all five pieces, you will receive a 20% discount off your entire order. (You receive 10% off if you keep 3 items and 15% off if you keep 4.) If you decide to send pieces back, Twirl will email you a paid shipping label that you will stick on the same box used to mail you the pieces in your trunk. Again, all you have to do is drop the box off at the post office within five business days. Then you are charged for the pieces you keep.
3. Unique boutique pieces vs. “big box” pieces
I love boutique shopping. Boutique owners are usually quite trendy themselves, so you’re bound to find trendy pieces in the boutiques even before you know those pieces are on trend. There’s something so special about adding one-of-a-kind pieces to your wardrobe that you aren’t going to find at Target or Old Navy. Needless to say, I became an even bigger boutique fan when I moved to Cedar Falls and started shopping at Twirl Boutique. I have never been in a boutique so budget-friendly, and if I wanted to buy a few shirts at a time, for example, I wasn’t breaking the bank.
A rule I tend to follow in my own wardrobe is to sprinkle in trendy alongside the traditional. Signing up to receive a Twirl Trunk will allow you to add both basics (as you’ll see in my trunk below) and trendy pieces into your wardrobe, based on your own personal needs and wants.
4. Shopping local
We all often say we like having the boutiques as shopping options here in Cedar Falls, but I will admit. . . I don’t get downtown as often as I would like. The Twirl Trunk will allow me to support local business without much effort on my part.
And the Twirl Trunk is available to shoppers outside of Cedar Falls as well, so my friends outside of Iowa are invited to the party, too!
5. Budget-friendly price point
One of my favorite things about Twirl is that this boutique offers trendy and stylish pieces for a woman on a realistic budget. You will see the prices of the pieces in my trunk below. For example, one of my tees was $22, and I have yet to see a Stitch Fix piece offered at that price.
Now that you know how it works, let’s get to the stuff you really care about…what I received in my first Twirl Trunk! I have included prices and sizes I am wearing for reference.
Pieces 1 and 2: Gray and black striped dress, size small ($36) and leather leggings ($30), size small/medium
Jacket from Old Navy, shoes from Target, necklace from Stella and Dot
And pockets…how awesome! Shoes are TOMS.
As you can probably figure out, I love the rocker details on the leggings.
Since I am 5’11”, I would probably not wear this dress by itself (meaning I would always wear leggings underneath), but to me, it is the perfect length to wear as a tunic with leggings. I see myself throwing a long cardigan over it for fall/winter.
And the leggings! I told Jenna in my profile that I have an edgy style (edgy for a teacher-mom in Iowa anyway), and these leggings are definitely edgy! These would be great to wear for a night out. And though I was initially not sure about so much leather, I soon decided that tunic tops and bulky sweaters for fall will work to complement the leggings, allowing the leather to be a fun component, not everything you see. Now I cannot WAIT to style these.
Piece 3: White pocket tee ($22), size small
Necklace from Express, pants from Stitch Fix, flats from Old Navy
GIVE ME ONE IN EVERY COLOR. So comfy. I loved the cut of the neck paired with the loose fit. Now this tee is not something you will find in Old Navy and Target. I promise…I’ve looked and looked.
Piece 4: Black layering vest ($40), size small
Now you KNOW I loved the studs on the shoulder, and I find the tie in the back to be super flattering. The chiffon material also keeps the vest feminine. This vest is a year-round piece. . . I could wear it with a long-sleeved tee or a tank underneath.
Piece 5: Olive striped cardigan ($38), size small
The button on the cardigan was an unexpected detail but so cute and fun. I told Jenna in my profile that I gravitate toward olive green and black. Perfect. This cardigan would be a GREAT fall wardrobe staple for a nursing mom, too. I instantly thought of my friend Ashton since she loves the color olive and just had her baby boy one week ago!
Tank from Old Navy, jeans from American Eagle, ankle boots from Target
Verdict: KEEP ALL 5 ITEMS! Jenna did a great job capturing my style – rocker-chic with a side of traditional and comfortable. I am sold on this service and will be signing up to receive Twirl Trunks once a month from here on out.
